At some point in your life, you may find yourself in need of a dental crown. Crowns are tooth-shaped metal, ceramic, or porcelain “caps” used to repair teeth compromised by wear and tear, decay, or dental trauma. These hollow caps are custom-made to match the size and shape of your teeth and cemented in place to fortify your tooth structure and prevent pain or discomfort. At the office of Greg G. Pitts DDS, we offer dental crown treatment to our patients in American Fork, Utah, and nearby communities.
In the past, traditional dental crowns were your only option for restoring damaged teeth. Today, Dr. Greg Pitts and our team offer CEREC dental restorations to simplify these services. Both traditional and CEREC crowns are effective in repairing compromised teeth. The difference lies in their composition and treatment period. While traditional crown treatment may take several weeks to complete, CEREC crowns can be completed in one dental visit.
Traditional crowns require at least two dental visits. On your first visit, your dentist will evaluate your oral health and the damage to your tooth to determine if a crown is your best option for treatment. If so, your dentist will grind down your tooth to remove enough enamel to accommodate your crown. Scans are then taken of your tooth and sent to a dental lab to design and fabricate your crown. This process can take as long as two weeks. In the meantime, your dentist will place a temporary crown over your tooth to contain the damage.
When your permanent crown is ready, a second appointment is scheduled to replace your temporary crown with the permanent crown to complete your treatment. Traditional crowns come in metal, ceramic, porcelain, or porcelain-fused-to-metal materials and are customized to meet your unique dental needs.
CEREC technology dramatically simplifies the crown process to avoid delays in your treatment. It also offers greater accuracy and precision in designing and manufacturing superior dental crowns for your use.
Through CEREC CAD/CAM technology, Dr. Greg Pitts can design, fabricate and install your crown all on the same day, eliminating the need for a temporary restoration. CEREC crowns are composed of metal-free ceramic or resin materials to give you natural-looking restorations that blend in seamlessly with your smile.
