Is Everyone a Candidate for Invisalign Orthodontics?

Crooked, misaligned teeth are very common. Thankfully, patients battling teeth alignment issues have several options to achieve a healthy, straight smile. While traditional braces are an excellent orthodontic treatment, many patients shy away because they’re conspicuous, bulky, and uncomfortable. The good news is that there are other patient-friendly teeth straightening options. For instance, Invisalign from Greg G. Pitts DDS in American Fork, Utah, uses clear, detachable trays to align teeth. This method is comfortable, less conspicuous, and convenient.

Invisalign delivers beautiful smiles without dental pain or making you feel insecure about your smile. But is everyone a candidate for Invisalign? According to Dr. Greg Pitts , candidacy for Invisalign depends on your oral health, the severity of your orthodontic issue, and age.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a revolutionary orthodontic system that uses removable, transparent trays to move your teeth into the proper position. Each Invisalign tray is worn for about two weeks before moving to the next in the series.

Most patients love Invisalign because the aligners are virtually invisible. You straighten your teeth without people knowing you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment. Moreover, Invisalign is comfortable and convenient — no dietary restrictions or need to learn new teeth cleaning techniques.

Perfect candidate for Invisalign

Dr. Pitts uses the below metrics to determine your eligibility for Invisalign:

  • Age: Invisalign is ideal for adults and teenagers for two reasons. First, a child’s jaw is still developing. Invisalign is perfect for moving teeth and may not have much influence if moving the jaw is part of the treatment. Secondly is compliance with usage. Invisalign teeth aligners must be worn for about 20-22 hours daily. Children may forget to wear the aligners or even lose them altogether, affecting the efficacy of Invisalign
  • Oral health: All potential Invisalign users must have excellent oral health. So, if you have cavities and gum disease, we must address these issues first before Invisalign treatment
  • The extent of orthodontic issues: Invisalign is perfect for underbites, overcrowding, crossbites, and gapped and crooked teeth. While Invisalign can treat many orthodontic issues, it’s limited for severe cases such as jaw correction, significant tooth rotation, extrusion, and intrusion. These cases are better treated with traditional braces and sometimes surgery
