When you have sleep apnea, it’s not just your bed partner who suffers from loud snoring. Sleep apnea affects several spheres of your life, and not just with poor sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the most common sleep-disordered breathing condition, happens when the tissues in the throat obstruct your airway. This often occurs when the throat muscles relax, blocking your airway as you sleep.
Individuals with OSA experience multiple pauses in breathing throughout the night. When the brain senses oxygen deprivation, it awakens your body to restore healthy breathing. These fragmented sleep patterns result in daytime fatigue, reduced concentration, headaches, and other related symptoms.
OSA doesn’t end with the above symptoms. Left untreated, sleep and oxygen deprivation strain your major organs, putting you at an increased risk of stroke, hypertension, cardiovascular problems, and diabetes.
Continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, is usually the first-line treatment for patients with OSA. This treatment pushes air into your airway through a mask placed over your nose or mouth. The pressurized air keeps your airway open as you sleep, promoting healthy breathing and sleep. While CPAP therapy works well for OSA, many discontinue this treatment because of irritation, noise, sinus infections, etc.
If you can’t tolerate CPAP, you might feel that effective treatment is beyond your reach. Dr. Pitts offers oral appliance therapy, which is as effective as CPAP therapy but with fewer side effects. OAT involves wearing a customized nightguard while sleeping.
Sleep apnea devices work in one of two ways: they push your lower jaw forward to keep the airway open or suppress the tongue to prevent airway obstruction. When worn as directed, a sleep apnea mouth device restores your healthy sleep and breathing, reducing the damaging effects of sleep apnea.
An oral sleep apnea device is effective in treating mild to moderate OSA. Many patients prefer OAT to CPAP therapy because it offers the following benefits.
Sleep apnea devices offer an easy-to-use and discreet alternative to CPAP therapy. Our custom-fitted oral devices help you breathe easier at night, giving you the rest and energy you need during the day.
