According to recent statistics, each year, upwards of 50 million Americans experience headaches so severe that they seek medical treatments. For many of these individuals, chronic headaches negatively affect the quality of their daily lives. What many people fail to realize is that their headaches may actually result from Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder.

What is TMD?

TMD refers to a group of related disorders of the Temporomandibular Joint and the surrounding muscles and tendons. The Temporomandibular Joint connects the temporal bone (upper jaw) to the mandible (lower jaw). Conditions of TMD involve many different symptoms, often making the disorders difficult to diagnose.

Often, dental conditions are the cause of TMJ disorders. Occlusion, or how your teeth fit together when you bite down, plays an important role in the comfort of your jaw. When your occlusion is ideal, your upper and lower jaw fit comfortably together, allowing the muscles and tendons of the jaw to relax. If your teeth don’t come together properly, your Temporomandibular Joint and the surrounding muscles and tendons are forced to over-compensate for your malocclusion (or poor bite), which can result in discomfort in the jaw, popping, clicking, muscle strain, and frequent headaches.
