Mouthguards

Protecting athletes. . . one smile at a time!

Most Utah County parents teach their children to wear protective gear when participating in sports and recreational activities. When a child heads out the door to hop on a bike, skateboard, or motorized scooter; their mother often calls, “Wear your helmet!” Wise parents should add, “and your mouthguard!”

Although there has been increased awareness of the importance of helmet use in recent years, many people fail to understand the equally critical need for tooth protection. An avid athlete himself, Dr. Pitts works continually to educate athletes about the importance of mouthguards.

Don’t gamble with your child’s smile. Protect their teeth with a custom sports mouthguard from Greg G. Pitts, DDS Aesthetic & Sports Dentistry. It’s not just organized team sports that are risky–riding anything with wheels can result in an impact strong enough to damage teeth. Motorcycles, bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and rollerblades all cause their share of dental trauma.

Dr. Pitts’ custom-fitted sports mouthguards are similar to those used by professional athletes. They are strong, comfortable, secure, odorless and tasteless. Unlike some ill-fitting types, ours do not restrict breathing, swallowing or speech. We even provide special guards for players wearing braces. (If you have spent thousands of dollars on orthodontic work, don’t naively rely on a flimsy two-dollar piece of plastic to protect your investment!)

In addition to tooth protection, regular dental exams and cleanings are essential to a child’s oral health. A healthy smile increases confidence and self-esteem. At Greg G. Pitts DDS Dentistry, we make dental visits enjoyable for children. Our exam rooms have overhead TVs for watching movies and we hold special bi-monthly Kids Days when we focus exclusively on our youngest patients. On these party days, we dress in costumes, take pictures, and give out special prizes. If your child is due for a check-up, give us a call and we’ll book their visit on our next Kids Day.

New parents often wonder when their toddler should have their first dental examination. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children have their initial check-up between 12 and 24 months. Make sure your child gets off to a good start. Schedule their first visit before they are two years old–even if all of their teeth have not yet erupted. During the consultation, you can talk to Dr. Pitts about sealants, fluoride, and any habits such as thumb-sucking.
